MARKNADEN Information

Mark Naden is a London and New York based designer and architect.

In culinary preparation there is a process called reduction where ingredients are slowly cooked to remove everything but the essential flavors. What remains is a dense liquid containing the richest ingredients. This is a fitting analogy for what Mark strives for in his work. He identifies the critical elements in a project and simplifies until only what’s essential remains.

Mark has been working as a designer and architect since 1986, beginning in Los Angeles and moving to Princeton, New Jersey in 1988. During this time he worked for several noted architectural firms on both local and international projects. In 1998, Mark founded TODA, The Office of Design and Architecture, a cross-disciplinary design consultancy. In 2009 Mark opened his own studio, MARKNADEN, to focus on consumer product and furniture design partnerships with manufacturers and retailers. He now splits his time between London, New York, and Milan, working on projects for both MARKNADEN and TODA.

Mark earned his Master of Architecture degree from Princeton University in 1994. Since then he has been a teacher and critic of architecture and design at Princeton University, California Polytechnic Institute, Pratt Institute, Parsons School of Design and Columbia University.

Mark’s design work has been featured in numerous periodicals including Vogue, Domus, MD, Interni, Abitare and The New York Times, and has been acknowledged for excellence in ID Magazine’s Annual Industrial Design Awards publication, The Chicago Athenaeum Good Design award, Surface Magazine’s T.A.G award, the International Design Awards, and by Germany’s prestigious Red Dot Award. Mark’s design work is part of the permanent collections at the SFMoMA, the Brooklyn Museum of art and the Pinakothek der Modern in Munich.
